Walking The Lakes

The Lake District, a destination of unparalleled natural beauty, has been aptly described by William Wordsworth as the "loveliest spot that man hath found".

Linthwaite House, in partnership with Steve Watts MBE, Founder of Lakeland Walks and Talks, brings you an unforgettable opportunity to explore the majestic fells and lakeshores in the unique Walking Windermere offering.

Steve, a seasoned hiker and photographer, has a profound connection to The Lakes, inspired by Lakeland Sheep Farmer Joss Naylor's remarkable feat of running non-stop over 72 lakeland mountains, 100 miles and a total ascent of over 30 000 feet (higher than Mount Everest) all within 24 hours. Steve’s journey began with a chance meeting with Naylor, who encouraged him to embrace the great outdoors. This encounter went on to transform his life, and he now shares his passion with others through bespoke walks and talks in the area.

Through mountain challenges, Steve has raised millions for children's causes, with his book, A Year Like No Other, benefiting Tony Hudgell, a young double amputee. He also fulfilled Tony’s wish to climb a mountain, raising over £60 000 for Tony's Foundation. His efforts have been recognised with an MBE from King Charles for his fundraising achievements.

Guests at Linthwaite House can enjoy a range of exclusive experiences, including a full-day guided hike for two along with Steve as their personal guide; luxurious accommodation; daily breakfast; and a 3-course dining experience at Henrock by Michelin Star Chef, Simon Rogan. Those reserving a Suite will also receive a complimentary packed lunch and a 'Herdy' flask for their journey into the Fells.

One of Steves’ favourite walks is Loughrigg, a mountain with panoramic views and a hidden gem, the Loughrigg Tarn. He also recommends exploring Deerbolts Wood, home to shy deer, and discovering hidden waterfalls, caves and ancient bridges.

Steve’s top tip for hikers is to always be prepared, respecting the unpredictable weather of the English countryside. He emphasises the importance of appropriate clothing and footwear, and encourages guests to be mindful of their limitations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
