Exploring the Monumental Artistry of Angus Taylor at Leeu Estates

Set within the picturesque Franschhoek valley, Leeu Estates stands as a sanctuary where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Among the captivating artworks that grace the Estates, the monumental sculptures of Angus Taylor stand out, drawing visitors into a realm where scale, material, and thought converge to create something truly extraordinary.

The connection between Taylor and Leeu Collection is as serendipitous as it is meaningful. He fondly recalls his conversations with Analjit Singh, the visionary behind the Leeu Collection. This relationship, rooted in mutual respect and admiration, paved the way for Angus’ work to become an integral part of the Leeu Estates experience, enriching the Estates’ artistic landscape.

Taylor’s journey into the world of monumental sculpture is not merely a story of artistic pursuit, but also one of self-discovery and exploration of human existence. What inspired him to focus on monumental sculpture? He shares his profound interest in playing with scale, creating what he describes as the "anti-monumental" monument. Unlike traditional monumental art, which often serves state, church, or commercial interests, Taylor’s work serves a higher purpose—free thought, humility, and a deeper understanding of our place in the world. His artistic journey is deeply rooted in gratitude for the opportunities and resources that have allowed him to express his true artistic vision.

Working on such a grand scale is a feat that many would find intimidating. Yet, for Taylor, it has been a gradual process of building confidence, embracing failure, and continually pushing the boundaries of his abilities. He shares moments when his creativity flows in sync with his work, describing the creation of the clay figure study for "The Suspension of Self-Assertion" as a moment that gave him goosebumps—a possible reflection of his true artistic "note." This tension between confidence and fear keeps him fully present and engaged in the creative process, making his work a testament to the struggle that is vital, both in art and in life.

His choice of materials is as diverse and challenging as his subject matter. Often relying on natural elements from his immediate environment, he sometimes combines them with bronze to create works that are as grounded in nature as they are in artistic expression. These sculptures are the culmination of a lifetime of drawing, making, and perfecting his craft - a process that, as he acknowledges, has taken his entire life. He deliberately avoids becoming too familiar with any one method or material, knowing that comfort can lead to complacency.

Looking to the future, Taylor is excited about several upcoming projects and exhibitions. Among them is "The Weight of Wings", currently on show at the Everard Read Gallery on Leeu Estates, and a potential return to sculpting in Delhi. He is also working on a 20-ton monumental granite sculpture for a beautiful estate in Cannes, showcasing his continued drive to push the boundaries of his art.

Guests and visitors alike are invited to explore the intricate exhibition of Angus Taylor at The Everard Read Gallery on Leeu Estates, where they can immerse themselves in the profound artistry that defines his work. Contact ivana@everardread.co.za for more information.
