2020 Save the Dates: A round-up of upcoming local events in Franschhoek

As the dust has settled from the “beginning of the year mania” and a brand-new decade is maturing into its own, schedules have been set for work and school. However, there is always a need to balance all the unavoidable realities with an equally exciting social calendar - Franschhoek Wine Valley has become synonymous with holding world-class events, staying true to being named the culinary and wine capital of South Africa.

On 01 February, Franschhoek Summer Wines kicked off the social calendar for 2020.

Franschhoek Literary Festival: Friday 15 – Sunday 17 May
A celebration of authors, poets and publishers. Events include writing workshops, discussion groups, theatre performances, contemporary and classical music concerts.

Franschhoek Winter Wines: Saturday 13 June
When winter rolls into the valley, we know exactly how to keep warm with a tried and tested way to beat the winter blues. Come have the ultimate #openforwinter experience at the Winter Wines festival, which offers an extensive variety of robust wines and food to select from. This will be its third year running and the offering promises to surpass festival goers’ expectations.

Franschhoek Bastille Festival: Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July
An excuse to dress up in your finest French attire as you join in the festivities of celebrating Franschhoek’s French heritage. The historic Franschhoek Huguenot Monument is the place to be for this two-day event which dates to 1995.

Franschhoek Uncorked: Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 September
Synonymous with participating wineries showcasing their new vintages, slipping into spring has never been made easier since its inception in 2009. Festival goers are treated to live music, cellar and vineyard tours, barrel tastings, food and wine pairings, and old-school lawn games.

Franschhoek Open Gardens and Art Franschhoek: Friday 23 – 25 October
A keen eye and love of flowers, gardens and art knows no borders. No matter where they are, these spaces offer tranquillity and peace. Since 2016 private residents and wineries have opened their gardens to showcase Franschhoek in full bloom. Come and enjoy the Winelands with its refreshing country air and exquisite views whilst travelling from garden to garden. Other attractions include the “Garden in a Pot” competition, teas and wine tasting in some of the gardens.

Franschhoek Cap Classique & Champagne Festival: Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 December
There is a common understanding in South Africa that December is not a month but rather a lifestyle. And what better way to kickstart the festivities than with bubbles, sun, food and sophistication – all a must at one of South Africa’s premier events of the year since 2006. This event highlights the best of bubbly and cuisine from local and international wineries.
