A Sculptor's Tale: The Artistic Journey of Jaco Sieberhagen

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” - Edgar Degas

Over the past 36 years, Jaco Sieberhagen has transformed his artistic vision into a remarkable journey. From his first wooden sculpture sold at an exhibition in 1988 to the monumental works that grace the prestigious Leeu Collection properties today, his story is one of relentless creativity and evolution.

Sieberhagen’s art is deeply rooted in the human experience and the natural beauty surrounding us. He draws inspiration from the stories of humanity and the stunning landscapes that fill our world. Each piece he creates serves a unique purpose - some evoke feelings of joy and harmony, while others invite viewers on a journey of discovery or contemplation.

A pioneer in his field, he utilises CAD and laser technology to craft stunning shadow sculptures from stainless steel. His innovative approach allows him to explore the “landscape of the mind”, transforming abstract thoughts into tangible forms. Just as a poet carefully selects each word to convey meaning, Sieberhagen meticulously chooses every element in his sculptures, weaving a narrative that captivates viewers.

He immerses himself in a variety of topics, reading articles, news reports, and academic studies that serve as fertile ground for his sculptural ideas. His sketchbooks are a treasure trove of thoughts and musings, often filled with more writing than drawings. Each sculpture emerges from this rich tapestry of knowledge, leading to various series that explore the different themes and challenges of our time.

When it comes to materials, he emphasises that these are vehicles for storytelling rather than the focal point of his art. The durability of stainless steel is essential for his larger sculptures, which are designed to withstand the elements.

Sieberhagen’s collaboration with the Leeu Collection exemplifies the mutual respect and appreciation that has developed over time. His work can be found at various properties within the collection, enhancing the beauty of these spaces and creating lasting relationships along the way.

Among these works, “Meeting Place”, located in the Tarn Cabin at Linthwaite House as well as at Le Quartier Français - stands out for its innovative design and the impact it has had on Sieberhagen’s career. This piece, featuring multiple elements spread over a larger area, has sparked significant interest and led to many commissions.

According to Sieberhagen, the work denotes “a special place where two people meet with harmony in thought and vision.”

Sieberhagen’s art is undeniably influenced by the vibrant and sometimes challenging environment of South Africa. Over the years, he has tackled numerous themes reflecting the realities and triumphs of the nation. From the “King’s High Tea” series that questions societal norms to “Step Up or Step Down,” which explores progress as both individuals and as a nation, his work resonates with the South African spirit.

His recent collections, like “The Other Side of Winter” and “Hand of Grace,” shift the focus toward hope and light, encouraging viewers to find beauty and resilience in their surroundings.

Ultimately, Sieberhagen hopes that viewers will take a moment to engage with his work, finding meaning and beauty that enriches their lives. The greatest reward for him is knowing that his art has uplifted someone, prompting reflection or appreciation for the world around us.

He is currently immersed in several exciting new commissions. With each fresh project, he continues to explore the depths of creativity and artistic expression, ensuring that his journey is far from over.
