Winter Romance in the Lakes

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Visit the Lake District
To fall in love with all things Leeu

As the month of love draws closer, we begin to see couples taking advantage of the beautiful Lake District surrounds to make unforgettable memories. The snow-drenched landscape beckons lovers to explore its winter magic before cosying up alongside a roaring fire…

Follow in the Footsteps of the Romantics

The Lake District has long been a lovers' oasis, serving as inspiration for many writers and poets - particularly during the Romantic era, when William Wordsworth and others made their homes in the area.

Follow in Wordsworth’s footsteps by strolling, arm in arm, along the immortalised Glencoyne Bay in Ullswater, where he wrote Daffodils (widely known as “I wandered lonely as a cloud”) in the 1800s. Pop into Dove Cottage - once his home, and now the William Wordsworth Museum - to learn more about his life and the Romantic era, and to read each other sweet nothings from times past…

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
-    William Wordsworth

Love Luxury

Find your romantic cocoon at the historic Linthwaite House, where you can keep cosy at the fireplace as the temperature outside drops and the sky turns grey.

Each room is individually designed and embellished with premium finishes. As the renowned country house hotel is nestled on a gentle rise surrounded by established gardens and well-maintained private woodland grounds, a peak out of any of its windows offers magnificent views to enjoy together.

Grab a cup of the famous hot chocolate, gaze upon the art that graces the halls and settle fireside to look out over Windermere and the imposing mountains beyond.

Adventure Together

The Lake District is full of picturesque walks. Feel on top of the world and make lasting memories with a sunrise or sunset hike, marvelling at the postcard-worthy landscape on your way up.

Although the weather may be chilly, many of the boats, such as Ullswater Steamers, Windermere Lake Cruises, Coniston Launch and Keswick Launch, have wonderfully comfortable cabins for you to snuggle up in and enjoy the lakescape from a water-bound adventure.

Enjoy Old-World Romance

Visit the Keswick Alhambra or The Theatre by the Lake for delightful old-world entertainment.

Keswick Alhambra is a 100-year-old cinema house, originally built in 1913, which is steeped in history and remains a chic and unique location for film-goers.

The Theatre by the Lake, on the other hand, offers a different kind of viewing experience. With two stages and community integration, the performances vary greatly, from plays to musicals. All offer great entertainment and something to talk about on the way home.

Tuck into Dinner for Two

There are many well-established and internationally recognised restaurants in The Lakes for you and your partner to enjoy, offering varying cuisines and atmospheres - some most definitely popping-the-question-worthy.

Michelin Star Chef Simon Rogan established the award-winning Henrock restaurant at Linthwaite House, and his team continues to offer guests an elegant dining experience and à la carte menu using local, seasonal ingredients inspired by flavours and techniques from around the world.

Celebrate the Love of Art

In addition to the art-studded halls of Linthwaite House, The Lakes offers plenty of wonderful destinations for (art) lovers.

Brantwood Estate offers 250 acres of land to wander through and beautiful views over Coniston Water. Visitors can also view many fine paintings, beautiful furniture and personal treasures of John Ruskin (1900), the famous writer, artist and philanthropist who once owned this Victorian estate, along with other exhibitions organised by the arts centre.

Visitors to The Lakes can also view the works of one of the Lake District’s most celebrated artists, Heaton Cooper (1995) - famous for his ability to epitomise landscapes at his studio in Grasmere.

Fly off into the Sunset

Come fly with me, let's take off in the blue
Once I get you up there
Where the air is rarefied
We'll just glide
Starry eyed
Once I get you up there
I'll be holding you so near
You may hear the angels cheer
Because we're together
-    Michael Bublé
