How early do you start planning for the festive season at Linthwaite House?
We actually begin as early as January! After each Christmas at Linthwaite House, we sit down for a debrief, reflect on what worked well, and decide on any tweaks for the following year.
What makes Christmas in the Lake District—and especially at Linthwaite House—so special?
There’s such a cosy, festive feel here. The hotel comes alive with stylish yet classic decorations, open fires, and a warm, homely atmosphere, coupled with five-star service. Step outside and you’ll see the rich winter colours across the grounds, and if you’re lucky, snow-capped fells in the distance—all enjoyed with a festive drink in hand from The Bar & Conservatory. It’s the perfect setting for a quintessential Lake District Christmas.
Can you tell us about the festive décor at the hotel?
We love to keep things traditional but elegant. Decorating is very much a team effort, with every department getting involved to make every guest’s festive season in the Lake District look and feel magical.
Are there any beloved Linthwaite House holiday traditions?
Christmas Day at Linthwaite House is always special. The highlight for many guests is our Christmas Quiz, which has become a long-standing tradition. We also host live entertainment with a singer on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, adding to the charm of a luxury Christmas in the Lake District.
What festive experiences do you curate for guests staying over the Christmas and New Year period?
We treat our guests to seasonal delights such as indulgent festive afternoon tea, a specially crafted Christmas Day menu, and even a gift from Santa left in every guest’s room.
What role do Henrock and The Bar & Conservatory play in your festive offering?
Food and drink are at the heart of the celebrations. Both the Henrock festive menu and The Bar & Conservatory offering showcase dishes full of seasonal flavours. Whether you’re in the mood for fine dining or something more casual, there’s always something delicious to enjoy.
How do you create a ‘home away from home’ atmosphere for guests during the holidays?
We focus on warmth and comfort, with open fires, a Christmas tree in every public space, seasonal décor throughout the house, and a welcoming team who make sure every guest feels relaxed and cared for. It’s all part of what makes Lake District festive getaways so memorable.
What’s the team spirit like in the lead-up to the holidays?
The season really starts when we put up the decorations together. We also do a Secret Santa and share a Christmas dinner as a team, with everyone from Linthwaite House and Henrock joining in.
What’s your personal favourite part of the festive season at Linthwaite House?
Welcoming our guests and seeing familiar faces return year after year. There’s such a lovely, relaxed buzz in the hotel at this time of year—everyone’s in great spirits, and it’s wonderful to be part of a traditional Lake District Christmas experience.
