ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

In 1994, architect Graham Goosen established his Franschhoek practice. His prime motivation is a concern for our environmental heritage, and a belief that the design professions have a shared responsibility to protect and improve this.

Graham was responsible for the redesign of the The Manor House and also collaborated with eminent Spanish architect Tomeu Esteva of Esteva i Esteva Arquitectura on the wellness spa and gym.

Johan Malherbe of the Malherbe Rust architectural practice in Paarl can take credit for many renovations and projects in the Cape winelands, including prestigious properties such as Babylonstoren, La Motte and Rupert & Rothschild. Johan was the architect behind three of the spacious cottages at Leeu Estates, namely Cellar, Fynbos and Terroir. Johan also worked with Tomeu Esteva on the state-of-the-art wine tasting facility.

Eminent Spanish architect Tomeu Esteva, together with his father Antoni, is a founder partner of Esteva i Esteva Arquitectura, a boutique practice with international projects including designs in India, China, North America and Europe.

Esteva i Esteva was founded in 1999, using the foundations of the work developed in previous years by Antoni, and starting an international journey working on projects of different scales, uses and formats. Esteva i Esteva’s passion for design includes very small and delicate furniture creations, interior design, landscape and architecture focusing on high-end residential and hospitality projects and other special designs, including the Human Rights Hall at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and Vana Retreat in the north of India. A spirit common to all Esteva i Esteva projects is the search for purity and the sense of context.

Rohan Young and Dominic Touwen of Young Touwen Architecture, an architectural practice based in central Cape Town, specialise in country houses and hotels.

Young Touwen Architecture's projects range from five-star game lodges, luxury golf estates, wine tasting rooms and restaurants to bespoke country houses and gardens in South Africa, Zambia, the UK and Australia. The practice is deeply committed to sustainable design, within both the contemporary and traditional architectural idiom, creating charming comfortable buildings, interiors and gardens for a local and international client base. Young Touwen Architecture was responsible for the extensive architectural renovations at Leeu House.
